SIXTY years of marriage has been celebrated a diamond couple from Skegness.

Len and Joyce Harrison from Yarburgh Road married on September 20, 1952 and have not looked back since.

The pair, both born in Leicester, moved to Skegness 24 years ago when they took on the New Haven guest house on Sunningdale Drive with their daughter Beverley and son-in-law Pete.

Joyce, who was the first female ambulance driver in Leicestershire when she took up a position in Melton Mowbray, told the Target she didn't know what she'd do without her husband.

She said: "We met on a blind date at a working men's club. My friend had met someone and he had a friend.

"When I met him I fancied my friend's boyfriend but that all changed and we've been married for 60 years.

"We have our quarrels like any couple but we have always looked after each other."

Len, 84, followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather by carrying on the family painting and decorating business. Something which served him well when taking on the New Haven guest house and still sees him painting for some of their three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren today.

He said: "We were always taught if we wanted anything to always talk about it first and we have always sorted it before we did it.

"Time has flown by, particularly the last few years."

The couple were married at St Alban's Church in Leicester and went on honeymoon to Great Yarmouth for a week, a trip which cost them just £10 and 10 shillings in old money.

Joyce still recalls the cost of her wedding dress which at £10 from C&A sounds a snip compared to today's prices.

The pair marked their diamond wedding anniversary with a celebration at the Welcome Inn, Skegness, surrounded by friends and family. They were also delighted to receive a card from the Queen, congratulating them on their achievement.
