THE Sunshine play area in Skegness was closed last week after equipment was damaged.

The basket swing on the outside of the main playground was damaged although investigations are under way to establish the cause.

Skegness Town Council clerk Steve Larner said: "It is unclear at the present time whether the damage was caused by equipment failure or whether the damage was as a result of vandalism or misuse.

"The playground has only very recently been subject to a full safety inspection and no significant problems were found.

"However, until I understand the cause of the problem, I have taken the precaution of closing the playground and removing some equipment.

"Clearly as the playground is well used, I hope to get it open again as soon as possible, but the safety of the children using the equipment is my main concern."

A formal investigation is currently being carried out and a report to councillors will be made in due course.

The sunshine play area on Skegness foreshore was officially opened in 2009 and replaced the town's former paddling pool.
